Nineteenth century Bremmer printing press, by Harrild & Sons of London. 1872Engraving of a steam-powered printing press in the 19th century. The steam engine (not seen here) used a belt to drive the wheel (at bottom centre). The use of steam power greatly increased the rate at which printing could be done. The machine shown here could do 2000 double- sided impressions an hour whilst a hand-operated press could only do 300. Illustration of the press used by the Illustrated London News in 1843.
