I should tell you than when I write poetry, I usually start by picking
a phrase that I like but I rarely know why. I write it down and the
rest of what flows from the pen is the way I feel about it. I don't
always know what it means.
But as I reread 'Night Rules', what I think it means is that when the
memories of what we have been return to us in the late hours of the
night, we realize that, no matter how good or meaningful those
memories seem, they were illusions created to avoid the realization
that our lives are beyond our control. Once that is accepted, there is
no need to fear death.
In the end, a poem means what it means to you. If your translation
reflects that, then it is correct.
