10 Airport Foods You Should Never Eat

Whether you're dashing to make a flight or stranded at the gate for hours, start your trip off right by avoiding these super unhealthy choices for airport food and drink.

9

Crispy Green Beans, P.F. Chang's China Bistro

(Photo: Kyle Nishioka via flickr/CC Attribution)
Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport consistently places last in rankings of airports with the healthiest food options, and its new P.F. Chang's certainly isn't going to help. Got time for a sit-down meal and think that the Crispy Green Beans sound like a healthy choice? (They're a vegetable and they're green—what could go wrong?) Think again. One order without sauce contains 895 calories; the sauce adds an extra 310 calories in just two ounces of liquid. What are they doing to those poor green beans?

Caramel Pecanbon, Cinnabon

(Photo: secretlondon123 via flickr/CC Attribution/Share Alike)
Cinnabon stores have become almost as ubiquitous in airports as they are in shopping malls—no wonder, as airports have thousands of captive flyers, typically with low willpower, to tempt with that Cinnabon smell. If you want to guarantee that you'll arrive at your destination with your pants a little tighter, be sure to order the Caramel Pecanbon, which packs a whopping 1,080 calories and 50 grams of fat into one bun. To really do some dietary damage, wash that Pecanbon down with a 24-ounce Strawberry Banana Chillatta, which adds 680 calories and 139 grams of sugar to your snack—giving you a total of 215 grams of sugar and an epic sugar high at 35,000 feet.

Chow Mein, Panda Express

(Photo: Florian Boyd via flickr/CC Attribution/Share Alike)
Sodium can be bloat inducing on the ground, and it can be even worse in the air due to the changes in pressure. To keep "jet bloat" to a minimum, avoid eating salty foods before flying—which means you'll really want to pass on the Chow Mein at Panda Express. This dish contains 1,060 mg of sodium—that's about 70 percent of the CDC-recommended amount for one whole day!

Large Dr Pepper, McDonald's

(Photo: Dan McKay via flickr/CC Attribution)
Speaking of the dreaded "jet bloat," Dr Pepper packs a double whammy: Not only is it carbonated, but the jumbo-jet-sized 30-ounce Dr Pepper sold at McDonald's also contains a sneaky 90 mg of sodium, which doesn't seem very thirst quenching! Plus, you’ll be sucking down 70 grams of sugar with that soda, which will keep you nice and jittery while stuck in the middle seat.

Sugar-Free Drinks, Starbucks

(Photo: VasenkaPhotography via flickr/CC Attribution)
You want to be skinny on your vacation, so you order something sugar-free from Starbucks before takeoff. Unfortunately, Starbucks uses the artificial sweetener sucralose in many of its sugar-free beverages. For some unlucky flyers, this choice may turn out badly, as sucralose can cause bloating and gas for people who don't process artificial sweeteners very well—and this will only be intensified in the air.

Double Chocolate Chunk Muffin, Au Bon Pain

(Photo: Wikimedia Commons via CC Attribution/Share Alike)
When you need a morning meal on the fly, a muffin can seem like a healthier choice than a bagel or breakfast sandwich. But looks can be deceiving. Take the Double Chocolate Chunk Muffin from Au Bon Pain, which has 580 calories (220 from fat), 86 grams of carbohydrates, and 49 grams of sugar. You'd be better off with a plain bagel (280 calories, 57 grams of carbohydrates, and only 4 grams of sugar) or even the Egg on a Bagel sandwich (430 calories) if you're counting calories.

Fettuccini Alfredo, Sbarro

(Photo: TripAdvisor LLC)
Feeling virtuous because you passed up that greasy pizza in favor of a pasta dish at Sbarro? You'll be shocked to learn what's lurking in that plate of Fettuccini Alfredo: The dish of carbs covered in cream sauce contains 2,940 calories (1,030 of which are from fat), 60 grams of saturated fat, 350 mg of cholesterol, and 4,160 mg of sodium. That's not going to sit so well during your flight!

Cheese Danish, Starbucks

(Photo: Cheese Danish via Shutterstock)
Eating saturated fat can constrict blood flow, which can put flyers at an even higher risk for deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Watch out for sneaky saturated-fat sources at the airport: Starbuck's Cheese Danish has 16 grams of saturated fat—more than an entire Pepperoni Lover's Personal Pan Pizza from Pizza Hut!

Jersey Dog, Smashburger

(Photo: TripAdvisor LLC)
If you're dining at Newark Liberty International Airport, you may think you're in the clear no matter where you eat. After all, it was named the healthiest airport by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in a review of some of America's busiest airports. But you'll want to steer clear of Smashburger and, in particular, the chain's Jersey Dog, which is a triple offender on our list of foods you should never eat before flying. It has excessive sodium (1,650 mg), has tons of fat (including 20 grams of saturated fat), and is topped with stinky sauerkraut and onions to make your seatmates miserable.

Volcano Nachos, Taco Bell

(Photo: Travis Grathwell via flickr/CC Attribution)
Stress can cause heartburn, so if you're a nervous flyer or worried about delays, you're already at risk for acid reflux. Don't make it worse by ordering Taco Bell's Volcano Nachos. Not only will the spicy "cheesy molten hot lava sauce" and jalapenos contribute to your heartburn, the nachos are also topped with beans, whose famous gas-causing effect only gets worse in the sky. The dish's 990 calories, 59 grams of fat, and 1,840 mg of sodium certainly won't do you any nutritional favors either.

10 Roadside Foods You Should Never Eat

Ah, the Great American Road Trip. The open road, the charming small towns, the wacky roadside attractions—and the ubiquitous fast-food chains just dying to serve you up a heart attack on a platter. Want to avoid an overdose on fat, salt, and calories on your next trip? Steer clear of these 10 roadside calorie bombs at all costs!

McDonald's Big Breakfast With Hotcakes

(Photo: inazakira via flickr/CC Attribution/Share Alike)
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so don't start yours with this atrocity from the Golden Arches. As you might expect from a meal containing scrambled eggs, a sausage patty, a biscuit, hash browns, and three pancakes, McDonald's Big Breakfast with Hotcakes is not the most nutritious meal. In fact, if you use the handy nutrition calculator on the McDonald's website, it will tell you that this breakfast contains 1,090 calories (almost half of which are from fat), 56 grams of fat (that's 87 percent of the recommended amount for an entire day), 575 mg of cholesterol (192 percent of the recommended daily amount), and 2,150 mg of sodium (90 percent of the recommended daily amount). That's right, this one meal contains enough cholesterol for two days, under FDA guidelines. I'm lovin' it! (If "it" is feeling my arteries clogging.)

Dunkin' Donuts Frozen Caramel Coffee Coolatta With Cream

(Photo: spablab via flickr/CC Attribution)
Need to stay awake on the road? Steer clear of this Dunkin' Donuts beverage unless you want to have the ultimate sugar crash a few miles later. The large Frozen Caramel Coffee Coolatta with Cream contains 130 grams of sugar! And this drink has more calories than most meals (1,050) not to mention 52 grams of fat—almost as much as that McDonald's breakfast.

IHOP Country Fried Steak & Eggs With Sausage Gravy

(Photo: Mark H. Anbinder via flickr/CC Attribution/Share Alike)
This belly buster combines all the best breakfast foods in one glorious meal. There's 8 ounces of fried beefsteak (topped with sausage gravy), two eggs, hash browns, and two buttermilk pancakes. Unfortunately, all those delicacies add up—to a whopping 1,850 calories (1,030 from fat) and 725 mg of cholesterol. Maybe limit yourself to just one breakfast food per meal?

Long John Silver's Big Catch

(Photo: Wikimedia Commons via CC Attribution/Share Alike)
Long John Silver's Big Catch was recently dubbed the "Worst Restaurant Meal in America" after the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) tested the meal's nutritional value. While 1,320 calories per meal isn't the highest calorie count on our list, this fried-fish special still packs in 33 grams of trans fat and nearly 3,700 mg of sodium. The American Heart Association recommends that people consume 2 grams or less of trans fat per day, meaning that this meal has enough trans fat to tide you over for more than two weeks! Also disgusting? The advertised 7 to 8 ounces of premium haddock that is the centerpiece of the meal was found by CSPI to actually be 4.5 ounces of fish and 3 ounces of trans-fat-drenched batter.

Smoothie King The Hulk Strawberry

(Photo: Jon Aslund via flickr/CC Attribution)
How bad can a smoothie be—it's basically just like eating a lot of fruit, right? Wrong. Smoothies can be nutritional bombs, with lots of added sugar and non-fruit fillers. Take Smoothie King's The Hulk Strawberry, a "nutritious smoothie meal." The 40-ounce serving of this shake contains enough calories for an entire day (1,928) plus 64 grams of fat and 250 grams of sugar! Eat a piece of fruit and drink some milk instead to satisfy your cravings.

Taco Bell Fiesta Taco Salad With Beef

(Photo: Wikimedia Commons via CC Attribution)
A salad is always a safe choice if you want to eat healthily, right? Not if you get the Fiesta Taco Salad with Beef from Taco Bell. This nutritional disaster contains 780 calories (380 from fat) and 1,590 mg of sodium. Those figures probably cancel out the few virtuous scraps of lettuce in that bowl.

Quiznos Veggie Guacamole

(Photo: Eliot Phillips via flickr/CC Attribution/Share Alike)
Jared from Subway lost a ton of weight eating subs, so a hoagie (especially a veggie one) might seem like a good on-the-go meal. Maybe if you skip all the delicious parts of the sandwich (like the cheese and dressing), this could be a good choice. Otherwise, one large Veggie Guacamole sub from Quiznos will deliver a jaw-dropping 530 fat calories (out of 1,050 total calories), 17 grams of saturated fat, 102 grams of carbohydrates, and 1,910 mg of sodium straight to your waistline.

Wendy's Baconator

(Photo: Eli Hodapp via flickr/CC Attribution)
OK, if you've willingly ordered a burger called the Baconator from Wendy's, then you're probably not super concerned about living a long and healthy life. But be warned—this burger lives up to its name, containing 970 calories (530 from fat), 1,890 mg of sodium, and 210 mg of cholesterol. But it also contains 57 grams of protein, two quarter-pound beef patties, smoked bacon, mayonnaise, and American cheese. We've all got to die sometime, right?

Chipotle Chicken Burrito

(Photo: Critical Moss via flickr/CC Attribution)
If your road-trip cravings take you south of the border, be sure to skip Chipotle's Chicken Burrito. This burrito with beans, rice, veggies, salsa, sour cream, cheese, and guacamole boasts 1,185 calories and 52.5 grams of fat. Satisfy yourself by making it a burrito bowl instead—the tortilla alone has 290 calories and 9 grams of fat.

Five Guys Fries

(Photo: Marshall Astor via flickr/CC Attribution/Share Alike)
The thick-cut fries at Five Guys are billed as "just plain potatoes cooked in 100 percent peanut oil," which sounds super healthy until you pick up your order and the paper bag is stained with grease in about five seconds. Sadly, these fries are as bad for you as they are delicious—a regular-sized order has 953 calories (370 from fat) and 962 mg of sodium. The large order is even worse, containing 1,314 calories (511 from fat), 57 grams of fat, and 1,327 mg of sodium. Considering that the fries are a side order, that's a lot of calories to accompany your meal!
