海外逸士

怎樣掌握英文詞彙的確切含義

中國人學英文經常有認知上的誤區。有些問題已經陸續談過。現在來談一下學習及
使用詞彙方面的問題。英文詞彙與中文詞彙一樣﹐有些同義詞之間的確切含義有點
差別。但不是所有同義詞之間都有含義上的差別。中文因為是母語﹐從小接觸使用﹐
一般區別都知道。而對英文方面﹐就難於掌握。不過﹐以中文推及英文﹐掌握詞彙
確切含義也應該通過大量閱讀接觸﹐得出詞彙的確切含義及其使用。語言不同﹐學
習的過程是類同的。

但是有一點﹐中國學習者未必考慮過﹐因為他們從理論上來學習英文﹐對於某些同
義詞在詞義上的差別﹐基本上是聽課得來的知識﹐而講課老師也是從理論上得來的。
譬如說﹕英文中的beautiful和pretty二詞﹐中國的英文學習者都知道有點差別。有
人甚至把beautiful譯成美麗﹐把pretty譯成漂亮。但在中文裡﹐沒人說美麗和漂亮
有程度上的差別﹐如說美麗比說漂亮更漂亮。假如說有差別的話﹐可能美麗較屬書
面用語﹐漂亮常用在口頭上。如果在一本小說裡﹐作者一會兒寫道She is a beautiful
girl.在另一地方又寫道She is pretty.難道她的美麗發生了差異﹖這當然是不可能
的。事實上﹐不是所有作家都知道詞彙之間的確切含義的差異。因為作家本身受教
育的程度不同﹐而且作家也未必遵循詞彙的含義差異來使用詞彙的。經常發現的情
況是作家只是使用詞彙的基本意義﹐就是同義詞的使用﹐也是為了不重複的原因﹐
而根本不在乎它們的差異。只有在特殊情況下﹐而且這個作家知道有差異﹐才使用
其有差異的確切含義。這點我們一般可從上下文的推敲中可看出來的。所以中國讀
者不要經常鑽牛角尖﹐要自己從大量的閱讀中得出某個詞是怎樣使用的﹐與另一個
同義詞有差別時﹐英美作家是否經常按差別來使用。要注意的是語言是高度靈活的﹐
不可能囿於理論上的條條框框。

關於信達雅翻譯原則

不管中譯英﹐或是英譯中﹐中國翻譯界似可謂“百花齊放”﹐隨心所欲。反正﹐一
般都不是對照著看﹐翻譯得離原文萬里也無所謂。最早的林琴南翻譯就是這樣的。
不過他不懂英文﹐是別人把意思說給他聽﹐他基本譯成文言。這樣的翻譯猶如隔靴
抓癢﹐也不能全怪林琴南。萬事開頭難嘛。什麼事情﹐就如造機器一樣﹐應該越來
越精細。翻譯應該也是這樣。但縱觀現在的翻譯﹐粗製濫造﹐各顯神通﹐大有謬之
毫厘之概。

        後來中國翻譯界的前輩提出信達雅的翻譯原則。所謂“信達”﹐我用通俗的話來闡
述﹐就是作者怎麼說﹐譯者就應該怎麼譯﹐不能走樣﹐不能自作主張﹐偷工減料或離
開原意。但是還有人只注重“雅”﹐要把譯文搞的漂亮好看﹐而內容離開“信達”
很遠。打一譬方﹐就像是繡花枕頭一包草。徒具形式。不能對照著看﹐否則簡直是
不知所云。只能看作這個譯者自己在寫自己的東西﹐跟原文似是而非。“雅”要在
“信達”的基礎上﹐失去了信達﹐再雅也毫無意義。這也就像真善美一樣﹐失去了
真﹐善美都是偽的﹐又有什麼意義。

        為什麼會有這樣的情況呢﹖依本人淺見﹐這些人不是不想譯得確切﹐而是因為英文
程度較差﹐較深的中文說法﹐在英文裡表達不出來﹐只能馬馬虎虎﹐也算是譯出來一些
東西﹐但結果是比沒有東西更不好﹐顯示了自己的淺薄。這種情況對初學者來說還可
原諒。看看有些名氣的翻譯工作者﹐按其翻譯質量是根本不能稱“家”﹐其譯文也
錯誤頻出﹐不能做到“信達”。特別看到的詩詞翻譯﹐簡直不堪一評。至於翻譯新
詩﹐譯者的水平低些也無所謂﹐因為相對於詩詞來說﹐新詩的水平本身就是低的。
有的新詩寫得亂七八糟﹐翻譯不出來﹐跟譯者沒有關係﹐是作者自己只有那麼亂七
八糟的水平﹐寫不出像樣的新詩來。當然不是所有的翻譯者﹐其態度是如此不認真。
有一位前輩接獲翻譯任務﹐要把法國作家大仲馬的THREE  MASKETEERS重新譯成中文。
以前的譯名是“三劍客”﹐取其雅而已。那位前輩卻堅持要把書題譯成“三個火槍
手”。他的要求是一絲不苟﹐忠實原文。如果大家都不忠實原文﹐我明天可以把該
書題譯成“巴黎劍俠傳”。那就有外國武俠小說的風味了。

I’m all sighs for officials vying only for personal interests;
How many of them forget themselves and think of the nation?

豈是運乖難得意﹐非為性傲不求人。
It’s not for my ill luck to be difficult to gain my goal;
It’s not for my haughtiness I never ask favor of anyone.
